NASA originally developed dichroic glass for the aerospace industry. It was actually used on the space helmets worn by astronauts. This special glass which was used on the face plates of space suits, protected astronauts from the harmful rays of the sun. By the mid 1970’s dichroic glass was made available to artists and jewelers. To create these beautiful and colorful stones, several layers of glass, along with multiple micro-thin layers of metal oxides and quartz crystals are fused together in a kiln at a high temperature.
